In order to grow your social media following, it is extremely important that you first find your niche. Well what exactly is a niche? When I first started out on Instagram, I had no idea what a niche was, let alone how to find mine! So, I headed to good ole Google and found this:
niche = denoting or relating to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population
In other words, FIND YOUR TRIBE! Connect with people who have similar interests as you + find a way to either help them with that common interest or bond with them over that common interest! People will follow you BECAUSE of your niche, so find one that is true to you + stick to it! Whether you’re a foodie, mommy, world traveler, photographer, yogi, mental health advocate, or fashion blogger, there truly is an Instagram niche for everyone. You just need to find it!
That is why I have written this article- to share with you tips on how to find you niche! So keep reading!
figure out what you like! easy right?
What would you talk about if you had to put together a PowerPoint presentation on something right now with no time to prepare or research? What topic gets you excited to talk about? The first step in figuring out your Instagram niche is deciding what you genuinely care about + what comes easy to you to discuss. After all, this is what you will be posting about for a long time!
(Side note: I do know that people change over time i.e. fashion bloggers turning into mommy bloggers all the time! But it’s good to evolve slowly over time as your followers get to know you first before switching niches!)
So, your niche should be something that you are truly passionate about. For me, I absolutely love travel, dogs, + advocating for body positivity. I could talk any of those topics for HOURS. But if you asked me to write a blog post about classic cars 1) I’d have absolutely no idea where to start + 2) I’d be bored out of my mind!
Let me point out that it’s totally okay at first to try out a few niches + figure out which one suits you best! I started out blogging for dog owners + eventually found myself lacking motivation to write. I switched my niche to encompass body positivity, travel + lifestyle instead. I found this niche way easier for me to commit to + more fun as well!
make you gram look pretty!
Not even kidding, this is one of the most important steps. When someone interested in your niche finally comes upon you Instagram account one day, you have about 5 seconds or less to impress them. They instantly decide based on the aesthetic of your feed if they want to follow you or not.
So how do you increase your chances of getting them to click “follow?” Improve the overall look of your grid by choosing a color scheme + sticking to it.
Also, make sure Instagrammers know what your profile is about right away. Have a concise bio that tells people who you are, a consistent color scheme, + eye-catching pictures related to your niche.

be as consistent as possible!
Figure out how often you want to post + STICK TO IT. Whether that’s once a day (which I highly recommend) or three times a week, just have a schedule + be consistent. Being consistent helps you gain credibility + shows your followers that you genuinely care about what you’re doing.
Being consistent also helps you big time with the Instagram algorithm. So if you are posting every day, your posts are more likely to be pushed towards the top of your followers’ feeds, thus increasing visibility as well as your chances of being discovered by new accounts as well.
follow accounts similar to yours!
It is a well-known fact that everyone wants to have a good Instagram followers : following ratio. In case you don’t know what I’m referring to, it is considered “good” to have more followers than the amount of people you yourself are following. It makes you look more credible + look less spammy.
That being said, I HIGHLY discourage you to from keeping your “following” number too low. It is very important to follow accounts similar to yours in order to improve your odds of being recommended to potential new followers.
For example, if you follow my account HERE, a dropdown box will appear titled “Suggested for You” that lists several other followers you may be interested in following as well. These suggested accounts are Instagrammers who I follow with niche content similar to mine.
End in point: Your chances of being suggested are increased when you follow bloggers similar to you! So follow them! You might make a few friends along the way too!
what accounts show up in your "suggested for you" box when you follow me?
